To get to know me a little better I’m going to share some facts about myself that you would never know from reading this blog
10 things you don’t know about me…
I just finished watching the new show on Netflix. Thirteen reasons why.
Thirteen Reasons Why is based on the book written by Jay Asher. The story follows a teenager Clay Jensen. As he returns home from school he finds a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers a group of cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker his former classmate and crush who committed suicide two weeks earlier. On the tape, Hannah unfolds an emotional diary, detailing the thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Through Hannah and Clay's dual narratives, Thirteen Reasons Why weaves an intricate and heartrending story of confusion and desperation that will deeply affect viewers. Why I decided to write about this is because, bullying is a major issue going on in this world today especially in young teens. This show gives a huge message that I believe a lot of people need to hear. It is very detailed and can be very emotional at times but I think it gives a clear idea on what is going on in schools now a day. I encourage people to watch this show. Not only to help people who are struggling but give people who don’t see the signs of someone who is dealing with depression because if you know the signs are there you could get those people help and potentially save someone’s life. The day I found out I was becoming an older sister. The day my life changed forever. In 9 fast months, I was going to have a little sister who would look up to me forever.
My dad called my sister and I into the living room and told us he needed to tell us some news. Now I had no idea what was going on. I figured it wasn’t going to be anything huge. Caroline and I sat down on the couch and he told us to shut our eyes. Now I’m thinking okay this is weird. He told us to hold our hands out and he placed to cards in our hands. We opened our eyes and we had 2 pink envelopes in our hands. He told us to open them at the same time and now I know somethings up. Finally, Caroline and I rip open the envelopes and there’s a pink card inside that reads “CONGRATULATIONS” you’re going to be a big sister. 13 years later and I still remember every second of that day February 21, 2004- Haley was born. The best day of my life. She was so beautiful and everyone kept telling me she looked exactly like me which made me even more happy. Watching her grow into the beautiful young girl she is today has been the best 13 years and I can’t wait to watch her grow even more. Being a big sister is very important to me. Someone is looking up to me every day. It also gives me motivation to strive in school and to show her anything is possible if you put your mind to it. She changed my life and still does every day. A lot of people have a lot of goals in life. I have one in particular and It started first time I ever went and saw where my mom worked. I was about 9 years old. I had a day off from school that day and she couldn’t find me a babysitter so she decided to bring me to her job for the day. I felt so special going with my mom to work for the day. We drove to fair acres’ senior home and drove up to her very own parking spot. We stopped in her office to put her things away and to get her files for the day on her patients. She grabbed a cup of coffee and a small cup for me (yes, I drank coffee as a 9-year-old and have been addicted ever since). She went over her files and we went off to the floor where her patients were. She introduced me to all her coworkers and patients. I watched my mom that entire day, followed her around and became inspired ever since to follow in her foot steps to become a nurse. Ever since that day and many other days I pretended to not “feel well” so I could skip school and go to work with her. I fell in love with helping people in need. That is why my biggest goal in life is to succeed in school and get good grades so I can be a successful nurse and become just like my mom.

ENG 100 Assignment #3: Film-Based Argument Final Draft Stopping Sex Trafficking In Slumdog Millionaire, Screen Writer Simon Beaufoy shares the story of Jamal, a boy who grew up in the slum neighborhoods of India and managed to gain a spot on the gameshow, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Throughout the film, Jamal is shown as a person who must overcome many obstacles to survive, including an experience of torture when he provides the correct answers to too many gameshow questions. Jamal wins the gameshow money but one could argue he gains the most joy at winning the heart of his longtime love, Latika. At an early age, Latika is forced into sex trafficking where she and Jamal got separated. Many young girls in the United States are forced into sex trafficking at a very early age. These girls are getting kidnapped off the streets, from family members for money and even just in their neighborhood where they grew up. Sex trafficking is a very major issue going on every day but not a topic being brought up a lot. We don’t hear about this very often in the news like we hear about other key issues. The American government can prevent the sex trade from expanding in the country by requiring hospitals to train their staff to recognize a victim and having stricter law enforcement. Before I develop my argument about ways to reduce sex trafficking, I want to first provide information about this phenomenon. According to unitar.org, human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery, and is the second largest criminal industry in the world, after drug trading and it can be best described as “recruiting, transporting and harboring of people especially women and children by use of threat, force or deception for exploitation.” Traffickers take advantage of vulnerable persons with false promises or physical abduction, forcing them into slavery, forced labor and sexual trafficking. How often do we hear about these women and children being taken and forced into this? Not quite often. I believe the American Government needs to raise more awareness about this huge epidemic going on in the United States. Why? According to ABC News there are about 1.5 million victims alone In the United States and about 20.9 million worldwide. We as people need to start talking about this more but the American government needs to help Many victims end up at the hospital but are too scared to come forward, because either they come in with their pimp who they claim are their boyfriends or they are brainwashed to think no one wants to help them. In Hospitals Train Staff to Spot Victims of Human Trafficking, Maureen McKinney writes that experts who studied human trafficking say a victims most promising lifeline could be a healthcare provider if they know what they are looking for. She writes that nearly eighty eight percent of trafficking survivors reported having contact with a health care provider when they were trafficked. According to McKinney the red flags are there if the health care staffers know what the signs are. Some red flags, can include submissive demeanor or have tattoos bearing someone's name. McKinney also states that a victim may be accompanied by a controlling companion who insists on answering providers' questions. There may be signs of physical abuse and trauma. And for labor-trafficking victims, red flags can also include hearing, vision, cardiovascular or respiratory problems from working in unsafe conditions. McKinney writes that not only determining red flags but also training for interventions and how to speak to the victims. If this was required for all health care providers to learn or teach I believe more victims would come forward and ask for the help they need and get in contact with services. Our law enforcement has a huge role in this. The way they are convicting these men and women involved in the sex trade industry needs to change. Sentencing all varies on many reasons but in many cases these people involved in sex trafficking get very short years in prison. For example, In ABC news Why did these Sex Traffickers only get a Slap on the Wrist? Three different incidents were mentioned. One of the stories featured was about three men running a prostitution ring in Northern California. Many of these women were sold for sex to as many as 20 clients in a day. Each man only received three years for involvement in this ring. So why aren’t traffickers facing longer sentences? According to Dorchen A. Leidholdt the Director of the Center for Battered Women's Legal Services at Sanctuary for Families in New York City, states in Why did the Sex Traffickers only get a Slap on the Wrist? that the Federal law requires that prosecutors be able to provide proof of force, fraud or coercion by these pimps. I believe this makes It very important for the victims of these crimes to testify in court, but a lot of these women are often too scared to come forward or believe these pimps are their only source of protection due to a concept called “traumatic bonding.” Which can be described as a strong emotional attachment between and abused person and his or her abuser. According to PsychCenter.com some signs of this bond may be substance abuse, poor mental health, homelessness and lack of identity. Leidholdt states in Why did the Sex Traffickers only get a Slap on the Wrist? that traffickers often brain wash their victims and use very sophisticated ways to do so. They get physically abused but these pimps make them believe that their safety depends on them, and manage to win their loyalty. According to Leidholdt short sentencing for human traffickers also means that victims are more scared to come forward, many pimps retain their power of prostitutes in jail behind bars, and prostitution rings are more likely to resume when the pimps are released from prison. The federal agency needs to be stricter on these sentences. Less than five years for a crime like this isn’t a strict enough punishment to get sex traffickers from continuing their illegal rings of human beings who are being forced into having sex with strangers. They need to start giving these criminals a minimum of at least ten years and allow the prosecutors to use other evidence including wire taps regardless of the victim’s testimony. Leinholdt says "Legislators and prosecutors need to beat traffickers at their own game, which means changing the law, we have to find a way to be as sophisticated as traffickers are themselves.” Longer prison sentencing means more victims will come forward because they know their abusers are behind bars for a long time. This is a major issue going on in this country and in this world. The government needs to start doing more so this issue stops spreading in the country and even around the world. A lot of these women and children are afraid to come forward because they don’t feel safe and protected. If we required our hospitals and staff to learn more about the warning signs and how to talk to these victims I believe it could make an enormous difference. Many of the sex traffickers get a slap on the wrist when it comes to sentencing and jail time. If they knew the government was helping with this issue I believe more of these victims would come forward and possibly speak about their stories and we could stop this huge epidemic going on. Maggie Price English 100 Assignment #1 Hiraeth Assignment The Final Day I can hear both of my parents yelling and I know something is wrong. “You did it again!” she says. Caroline and I are sitting in our room watching our favorite Sunday morning cartoons and playing our favorite board game Chutes and Ladders. “Mary, I’m sorry she meant nothing to me,” he says… Although I’m young I know something is wrong and I can feel somethings going to happen. We all hop in the car and head over to Nana and Pop pops house for Sunday dinner. We walk up to the small white porch with a brown whicker love seat sitting in between a beautiful garden of Nana’s favorite lilies and lilacs that Pop-Pop picked out for her. I open the tiny white door, I can hear the news playing on the tiny black square TV and pop-pop resting on this favorite brown leather chair. Nana has set out our favorite candy on the little glass table. Although mom and dad never liked us eating the candy before dinner I have a big sweet tooth and always manage to sneak a few. Nana is cooking in the kitchen making my favorite spaghetti and meatballs I can already imagine the meatballs melting in my mouth. Alex, Zack, Nick, GG, Pop-pop price, Aunt Stephanie, Uncle Michael and Aunt Adrienne all arrive and all fifteen of us try to pile on the small white couch until dinner is ready to eat. Pop-pop starts playing the piano and tries to get me to help him play he always says I have great long fingers I would be the perfect pianist. I’m too shy and my cheeks get as red as tomatoes when he says that so I say no. Instead we all just sit there and listen to him play. He plays music in the manner of a skilled and sensitive musician. The tune of his playing fills our faces with smiles as we listen to him play. I try to help Nana, GG and Mom in the kitchen. I love being in the kitchen with them I feel happy and warm when I am in there with them and I would try to sneak Nana’s recipe occasionally. I always wondered how she made her spaghetti, meatballs and sauce so perfect, it’s like it’s a top-secret recipe she won’t even show GG, her own daughter! I say, “Can I please help you three with any of the cooking?” Mom says, “Thank you sweetie but we got this under control. How about you go set up the dining room table with your sister and cousins.” I’m young and they don’t want me to ruin the meal. Hopefully one day they will let me help them cook the dinner. I yell into the living room for Caroline to help me set the table. “Boys knock it off!” Aunt Stephanie yells. Alex and Zack goof around, so I don’t even bother asking them to help. Caroline and I place the off-white table mats on the table first, the cloth napkins right next to them, and the bright white china plates right on top. Caroline and I place our plates right next to each other and Mom and Dad next to us. Pop-pop and Nana at the head of each table like always and everyone else on the other side. Dinner is almost ready but not quite yet so all us kids go play outside for a little bit. Birds are singing in the sky; the sun is beating down and can hear all the other kids screaming and playing outside. It’s a perfect spring night to play our favorite outside games. All the boys start playing with the soccer ball and Caroline joins in. She always likes playing sports and being a tomboy. Me not so much. I just sit and draw hearts with chalk and play hop scotch. Dad comes running out and says, “Kids come in and clean up, dinner is about ready.” I can’t wait. I am so hungry my stomach can’t stop growling. All fifteen of use pile into the dining room and sit down at the long brown rustic dining room table. The table is filled with so much food it looks like my Nana cooked for an entire army. We all make up plates and wait for everyone to be ready so we can say grace. "Bless us, O Lord, and these, thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen." And we all dig in. I stuff my face. The meatballs are so tender and soft they are like a cloud and just melt in my mouth, the spaghetti is so fresh and although were not allowed in the kitchen when Nana is making pasta I can still imagine her making it in the kitchen all day today. To top off the meal there is some freshly baked Italian bread that Pop-pop picked up in South Philadelphia that day. It still tastes so fresh as if it just came out of the oven. It’s so quiet in the room as we all eat. It’s like you can hear a pin drop. “Dinner is delicious” Pop-pop yells out. “You always know how to make my stomach jump with joy dear” Nana gives him a big smile and blows him a kiss across the table. Their love for each other is beautiful. I always hope one day I can find love like theirs. We all scarf down our plates and end up going for seconds. Dinner is done and it’s time to clean up. Mom volunteers Caroline and I to do the dishes and we argue over who’s going to do it. “I don’t want to do it mom!” Caroline says. “But that’s not fair I did It the last time!” I yell back. “We’ll make this fair this time” Dad says “Caroline, you wash, Maggie you dry” “I guess if we do it together we’ll get it done much faster”. I say to Caroline. “Agreed” she says. After were done cleaning up we relax in the living room. We’re all just sitting around laughing and enjoying each other’s company, and we’re finally ready for some desert. Nana and GG prepare the table again and bring out all the delicious cakes and pastries. A beautiful chocolate cake for the kids and coffee and pastries for the adults. We all indulge in some desert and coffee. After desert, I feel so full it feels like I can’t eat for four days. I fall on the white couch in the living room and digest all the food I just ate. Around eight o’clock, I begin to say my goodbyes to everyone. Nana and Pop Pop give me a kiss goodbye and say, “see you next Sunday” I give them a kiss back and scream “CAN’T WAIT!” Sunday dinners with the whole family at their house is my favorite day of the week, I look forward to it every week. Another long ride home I don’t look forward to all I can think about is lying in bed with my favorite stuffed animal peanut. I’ve had him since I was born. We finally get home and Caroline and I get ready for bed. We change into our pajamas, brush our teeth, and pile into bed. Mom and Dad come say goodnight and tuck us in. We say goodnight and I shut my eyes. “Get out!” my mom says “Mary please talk to me” my dad says Their screaming voices wake me from a deep sleep. I peak my head out the door as quiet as a mouse. Caroline is still sleeping I don’t want her to wake up. “There’s nothing to talk about. You already did the damage when you met her.” “It was nothing like that” “Please let me make it up to you” “we can work this out” “There’s nothing to work out anymore. I’ll have your stuff packed tomorrow. Go stay you’re your mother tonight.” “But what about the kids?” “I’ll figure it out. Were done.” I run back to bed, as dad walks down the hallway and walks out the door without turning back. I worked on this project mostly by myself. I enjoyed working on this project by myself because I like working on research projects especially a topic that interests me a lot. The most difficult part I think about writing this paper was how to start my paper and how to incorporate the movie Slumdog Millionaire in it. I have trouble a lot getting myself started so I asked for some help from Professor Mangini which helped a lot. I started writing this project after we watched the movie and got some more research on sex trafficking in the United States. I think this was a good approach because I took some time to research and that helped me a lot when writing. I wrote most of the paper at school which next time I don’t think I should do that. I can get distracted very easily and I think I work better when I’m by myself in my room where it’s quiet and relaxing. I chose the topic sex trafficking. I wrote about this because this has always interested me. Sex trafficking is a very genuine issue going on in the United States and not many people realize its going on every day all around in their neighborhoods. When I did some research its shocked me how many women, men and children are affected by this every day. All these interesting facts made me want to learn more and write about how I think we can change this genuine issue. Next time I work on this project I think I need to look up more facts and back up them more and work on it in a quieter environment so I can focus.

A secondary audience could be students from other classes, family and friends and other outside peers who visit your blog. Focus The focus of this assignment should be explaining Jamal’s background and where he comes from and how he got to where he is now and how no matter where you come from or who you grow up around doesn’t mean you can’t be successful and smart. Style The style of this assignment should be powerful. I suggest you use quotes and important scenes from the movie to answer the questions above and to have convincing argument. |
